Today marked the kick-off for the second annual Ceili Leahy Senior Day of Service. Students learned the definition of Service Learning as recognized by the Virginia Department of Education as a High-Quality Work Based Learning opportunity! Students from the core planning committee also shared what service meant to them. The day of service will occur Friday, April 12th, 2024, and with plans to partner with 10 local non-profits as well as Fredericksburg City Schools.

Empowerhouse has partnered with Walker-Grant Middle School! In December, the local organization spoke to the 6-8 grade health classes on the use of technology and relationships, “Digital Connections”. The discussion emphasized the importance of online and internet safety. Topics covered included types of cyberbullying, uses and misuses of social media, forms of abuse that occur both in person and online. Students also learned about how to set boundaries and provide consent. A hotline and contact information for Empowerhouse was provided. Superintendent Marci Catlett, City Manager Tim Baroody, and Chief of Police Brian Layton toured the new middle construction site with representatives from English Construction and Downey and Scott Construction Management Services. The roof work has begun, and the team is preparing to pour the concrete second floors next week. Stairwell masonry is nearly complete, and stairs are about to be installed. The project continues to track ahead of schedule and under budget.

Please be aware that Public Works and their contractors continue to work on sanitary sewer repairs crossing the Cowan Blvd. area between Snowden Hills Blvd. and Hospital Drive – and this area of Cowan Blvd. will remain closed to through traffic for some time. We would like to make everyone aware that at least 6 buses are going to be affected as well as anyone that needs to use Cowan Blvd to access Hugh Mercer. Please use caution in the area and follow temporary signage. Remember, Spot My Bus is a great app to track your student’s bus. Thank you in advance for your patience.

🎉Congratulations to our esteemed school board, who witnessed the return of Mr. Jarvis Bailey and welcomed Mrs. Molly McFadden! Mr. Bailey and Mrs. McFadden took their School Board Oath of Office yesterday, January 2, 2024, at the Fredericksburg Courthouse and were sworn in by Judge Gordon Willis. Mr. Bailey has proudly served on the Board since 2007. We look forward to their support of our FCPS faculty, staff, students, and families. We are also grateful for Mrs. Jannan Holmes, who honorably served on our school board from 2010-2023. Today she also took an Oath of Office and will serve on the Fredericksburg City Council.

Paula Poole - Generously Donated coats for our families. Avery Ballet- Adopted a preschool family for the holidays. Unmasked- Donated holiday gifts for 26 families. New City Fellowship Church- Donated books for every preschool student for the holiday break. Mary Washington- Donated 200 show boxes filled with holiday treats for all Preschool Programs students. Huge shout-out to our school community that supported multiple families for the holidays: Hugh Mercer Elementary School - School staff donated over $1,500 towards 12 student's holidays. Lafayette Elementary School - Donated holidays gifts for 8 students. Walker Grant Middle School - Donated holiday gifts for 19 students. Central Office - Donated holiday gifts for 4 students.

Today is the District 18 competitive events for DECA. Students came together to compete in 22 occupational areas related to marketing. The top four students in each occupational area will go onto state competition in early March. Full gallery: https://tinyurl.com/fxbg-deca

FCPS was awarded the Virginia Department of Education Teacher Apprenticeship grant, which allows for one currently employed FCPS paraprofessional to participate in the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) Teacher Apprenticeship Program as a Teacher Apprentice Paraeducator (TAP) in the special-education area. Mr. Christian Omundson was selected as the recipient. Congratulations!!
