In our attendance meetings at W-GMS, we came to the conclusion that some of our attendance issues are due to students' self-esteem surrounding their appearance, specifically hair. With the teamwork of Ms. Cummings , Ms. Frye, Ms. Jones, Ms. Allison and our lovely hostess Ms. Brockenbrough we were able to coordinate a Cosmetology Hair Salon Day! This idea was an incentive for our attendance students to come to school because you just never know what surprises will be in store 😉 Attendance matters, because you matter!

Goodr and Aetna Came to Fredericksburg! Did you see the Pop-Up Grocery Market at James Monroe High School? On December 21st, Goodr (a community of dedicated partners committed to eliminating food waste for the greater good) and Aetna (Aetna Better Health of Virginia), partnered to bring the shopping experience to many of our local families. Fortunately, we had a connection! Clara Camber, 2016 James Monroe High School alumni, provided the opportunity for partnership. Clara currently works for Goodr as their Project Coordinator. To learn more, visit https://goodr.co/our-story/. Goodr’s set up for the event included providing families with a grocery cart to receive fresh produce, eggs, milk, a turkey, bread, juice, and staple goods. Aetna came with their Wellness on Wheels vehicle to share health resources as well as invite families to join in outdoor games while enjoying a hot cup of cocoa or apple cider. To learn more, visit https://goodr.co/our-story/ and/or https://www.aetnabetterhealth.com/virginia/index.html.

Students attended their first Virginia Rules assembly last Friday. Virginia Rules is Virginia’s state-specific, law-related education program for middle and high school students. The purpose of Virginia Rules is to educate young Virginians about Virginia laws and help them develop skills needed to make sound decisions, to avoid breaking laws, and to become active citizens of their schools and communities. We will continue this program periodically for the reminder of the year.

Today marked the kick-off for the second annual Ceili Leahy Senior Day of Service. Students learned the definition of Service Learning as recognized by the Virginia Department of Education as a High-Quality Work Based Learning opportunity! Students from the core planning committee also shared what service meant to them. The day of service will occur Friday, April 12th, 2024, and with plans to partner with 10 local non-profits as well as Fredericksburg City Schools.

Empowerhouse has partnered with Walker-Grant Middle School! In December, the local organization spoke to the 6-8 grade health classes on the use of technology and relationships, “Digital Connections”. The discussion emphasized the importance of online and internet safety. Topics covered included types of cyberbullying, uses and misuses of social media, forms of abuse that occur both in person and online. Students also learned about how to set boundaries and provide consent. A hotline and contact information for Empowerhouse was provided. Please be aware that Public Works and their contractors continue to work on sanitary sewer repairs crossing the Cowan Blvd. area between Snowden Hills Blvd. and Hospital Drive – and this area of Cowan Blvd. will remain closed to through traffic for some time. We would like to make everyone aware that at least 6 buses are going to be affected as well as anyone that needs to use Cowan Blvd to access Hugh Mercer. Please use caution in the area and follow temporary signage. Remember, Spot My Bus is a great app to track your student’s bus. Thank you in advance for your patience.
