The Immigration Legal Resource Center (IRLC) is a nonprofit organization that works to educate immigrants and community organizations on their legal rights.

Catholic Charities

Catholic Charities is an organization that provides resources and assistance to vulnerable members of our community, regardless of their faith.

Legal Counsel for Youth and Children & Northwest Immigrant Rights Project

These nonprofit organizations have collaborated to host trainings to assist families to create an Immigrant Safety Plan, which can help parents plan for the care of their child, particularly if the parent is detained or deported.

Virginia Department of Social Services

The Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS) provides useful information to immigrants in the Commonwealth of Virginia regarding employment, housing, healthcare, education, citizenship, and more.

Women's Refugee Commission

The Women's Refugee Commission provides a toolkit to assist detained and deported immigrant/undocumented parents with information necessary to maintain their parental rights and make well-informed decisions regarding the care and welfare of their children.

American Civil Liberties Union

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is a nonprofit organization that operates nationally to provide legal assistance in cases where it feels civil liberties have been violated. They provide an informational one-pager to explain what rights people have if they are approached by a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer.

US Immigration and Customs Enforcement

According to ICE Directive 11064.3, "when a parent or legal guardian is arrested or detained for a civil immigration proceeding, the alien can maintain visitation with their child or incapacitated adult for whom they serve as guardian, coordinate their care, and participate in any related court or child welfare proceedings."

The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights offers a toll-free information and referral hotline for immigrants in need of assistance. The hotline can be reached at (888) 624-4752, available Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm.
